Zambia Daily Mail ? Overcome unforgiveness in your marriage

couple-001WORDS OF FAITH with PASTOR KATAI
DOES your flesh seem to scuttle when you come into contact with certain people? When you hear the sound of their voice, does every fibre of your being recoil? Does your chest tighten when you think of them?
Are you embarrassed to admit this is the way you feel about the person you share your life with? There is a possibility Satan has you in his grip through unforgiveness.
Recently, at our local church, we had a hot service; the main service came with a sermon theme, ?Overcoming the spirit of unforgiveness in our lives?, which I wish to share with you. This theme got its main text from I Samuel 24, where King Saul made a decision to kill David. Reason? King Saul became envious and jealous of young David?s achievements (I Samuel 18:7-8). From that day King Saul declared war against the innocent, weaker and defenseless mortal answering to the name of David son of Jesse.
In the quest to restore any relationship, the first step is to identify your enemy. Too often in marriage when there is offense and conflict, we identify our partners as the enemy. I strongly feel that our partners are never the enemy. If we learn who our enemies really are, we can effectively fight the battles in our marriages and rise to victory. Our real enemies are the powers of darkness and our own flesh. These enemies often go unnoticed in the heat of battle. Our flesh seeks to please itself and cannot please God. The apostle Paul warns us about our flesh, in Romans 8:8, ?Those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.?
The powers of darkness intend for all marriages to be destroyed. If you commit to God and your partner, you will wrestle with the forces of darkness. Ephesians 6:12 declares, ?For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.? When we recognise our enemies, we are more effective in loosening Satan?s grip of un-forgiveness.
We often equate forgiveness with something warm and fuzzy. Truthfully, forgiveness is quite the opposite. Forgiveness can be quite painful when it involves someone you are madly in love with. In marriage, forgiveness is not ?Don?t worry about what you did, I?m fine with it and we all make mistakes.? It sounds spiritual and great coming out of our mouths, but inside we are struggling with hypocrisy. We are plagued by an abyss of pain, anger, bitterness, and resentment. Forgiveness is not lip service.
These unchecked feelings can potentially become emotionally, mentally, verbally, or physically murderous. Remember King Saul?s behaviour toward the young David. Forgiveness is not being so numb to pain that we are oblivious to reality. In marriage, when we embrace numbness our hearts transform into ice. Forgiveness is not forgetting the offense. Forgiveness is not choosing to inflict the price for the offense. We should all learn to honour God with our hearts and not just our mouth. We are being hypocritical or lying when we say we have forgiven but unforgiveness still rots our souls. Satan grips and weakens us through unforgiveness. He tightens his grip through a religious spirit that says the right thing while refusing to confront the offense and heal.
Are you struggling to forgive your partner? Read on please! How do you forgive someone who was never supposed to hurt you in the first place? Why forgive them? What about all the damage to your marriage and family? The best answer is you must; forgiveness was extended to you. Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15, ?If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.? If you refuse to forgive, you operate in sin and in covenant with Satan.
These questions and declarations are hard to swallow. You may have battled with them in your marriage, but today I urge you to come out victorious. We battle so much with unforgiveness because we cannot see our own sin. I cannot see that my unwillingness to forgive is just as ugly to God as the things I blame my spouse for. The reason we battle unforgiveness is because we can only see the depravity in the souls of others, ignoring the beams in our own eyes.
We can only win the battle of unforgiveness when we realise that we?re in need of forgiveness from God and our sweet partners. Furthermore, we can only win the battle when we?re willing to face the ugliness of our own heart and surrender our heart to God. We should realise our enemies are our own flesh and Satan, who loves to work in our flesh. Unforgiveness is a work of the flesh, and it will remain until you crucify it on the altar of forgiveness.
We struggle to forgive because we justify our rights and inappropriately apply God?s Word. Many of us have declared inwardly or outwardly, ?The Bible says, ?Be ye angry.? ? We forget the rest of the Scripture verse: ? ? and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath? (Ephesians 4:26, KJV). If we are honest, many of us are angry and sin for days, weeks, months, years. Many of us will carry the sin of unforgiveness to our grave.
Forgiveness becomes a struggle when we seek to please our flesh. We struggle because God demands that we be like Christ. God is as displeased with unforgiveness as he is with sexual sins, deception, lying, and envy. We must remember that any sin either of us could commit, Jesus paid for at Calvary. Who gave us the right to make our spouses pay for sin when we did not?
Due to the gravity of their offenses, we believe we have the authority to execute judgment on our partners. But God would never entrust vengeance into our hands (Romans 12:17-19). Why? Our sin-stricken souls will never view our spouses purely through the eyes of God?s grace. We should be concerned for ourselves when we seek revenge on the people we promised to love, honour, and cherish. Unforgiveness unequivocally implicates the wickedness hidden in our hearts and the depravity of our own souls.
Through many offenses, trials, betrayal, and calamity, I have learned real forgiveness. I have learned that the world?s standards for marriage are a slap in the face to God. When we decide not to forgive, we call it ?irreconcilable differences? or irreparable marriage?.? God calls it unforgiveness. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the only biblical sin for which there is no forgiveness. In most divorce cases, blasphemy is never mentioned.
Real forgiveness is threefold. Forgiveness means excusing the penalty for an offense, offering pardon. Forgiveness means renouncing anger and resentment. Finally, forgiveness is a choice. God gave all of us the power to choose. These definitions are simplistic, but they pack enough power to loosen the stronghold of unforgiveness.
We hinder the move of God because of too much pride to forgive. I learned that forgiveness is a choice. We make the decision to forgive, even if our emotions, feelings, and desires have not surrendered in obedience to God. As children of God, we live and walk by faith, not feelings. When we make decisions based upon feelings, we give Satan the rope to hang us with. Real forgiveness is demonstrating what Christ did for us on the cross.
The devil understands the power of forgiveness. He had the opportunity to behold the glory of God and the kingdom of heaven. He has been doomed to hell and is mad and desires us to share his fate. Satan knows that forgiveness redeems and restores relationships. Satan is self-employed to steal, kill, and destroy (John10:10). Unforgiveness opens the door for him to hold us back. Each day we incite harsh words because of offense and inflict the silent treatment, we strengthen Satan?s rope of entanglement. As the sun sets and we nurse anger, bitterness, and resentment, the devil smiles. We have embraced the power of darkness.
Satan is selfish and proud; when we are unforgiving we act like him. Unforgiveness is laced with pride, which cost the devil the kingdom of heaven. Loosen Satan?s grip and forgive. God?s forgiveness propels us into salvation and restoration. When we let go of wrongs, we loosen Satan?s grasp on our relationships. Your marriage can be restored and bring glory to God again. California police search for suspect in fatal stabbing of girl

(Reuters) - A manhunt was under way on Sunday in a northern California suburb for a suspect who authorities say stabbed a 9-year-old girl to death in a suburban home and fled, officials said.

Residents of Valley Springs, California, 60 miles southeast of Sacramento, were being warned on Sunday morning to remain inside their homes with their doors locked as investigators fanned out across the region, hunting for the suspected attacker.

Authorities said the victim's 12-year-old brother encountered an intruder in his home on Friday afternoon and the suspect fled, according to KCRA, a local television news station.

The boy went to check on his sister and found her stabbed. She was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, KCRA reported.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department said in statement released on Sunday morning that the suspect may be armed and dangerous.

The department said multiple law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for a white or Hispanic man, about 6-feet tall and described as "muscular," with longish gray hair. They said he was wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and blue pants.

The victim's identity has not been released.

Apple docked $118,000 by China court for violating authors' copyrights

Apple docked $118,000 by China court for violating authors' copyrights

Apple will have to pay three Chinese authors a total of $118,000 for stocking their books in its App Store without a proper say-so, according to China Daily. A court ruled that it was Apple's job to verify that third-party uploads met copyright requirements and that it had the means to do so since all the books in question were best-sellers. Apple's attorney declined to comment, but the court also suggested that similar online retailers should learn from the case "and improve their verification system" -- bringing perhaps another headache to would-be e-book stores in that nation.

Dow Chemical sees farm products driving profit this year

By Garima Goel

(Reuters) - Dow Chemical Co posted a better-than-expected 33 percent jump in quarterly profit as farmers in the Americas bought more of its seeds and pesticides, overshadowing a decline in European demand for its plastics.

Dow, the largest U.S. chemical maker by sales, forecast that demand for its seeds and crop-protection products would drive further growth after a quarter in which its agricultural science business posted the highest sales growth of its various units.

Sales at Dow's agriculture science business, which supplies seeds, oils and farm chemicals, rose 14 percent to $2.1 billion in the first quarter, the company said in a statement.

"Two-thirds of the increase in revenues and profit came from new (agricultural science) products. That will continue to set records for us this year, and the next several years," Chief Executive Andrew Liveris told Reuters by telephone.

Rivals DuPont

and Monsanto have also reported higher quarterly results due to demand for drought-hardy seeds and crop chemicals from farmers looking to boost yields ahead of the spring planting season.

Dow Chemical shares were up 4 percent at $33.59 in early morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company's net income rose 33 percent to $550 million, or 46 cents per share, in the first quarter from $412 million, or 35 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, the earnings were 69 cents per share, well ahead of the 61 cents analysts had estimated.

Revenue, however, fell 2 percent to $14.40 billion, missing the average analyst estimate of $14.88 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales at Dow's performance plastics unit, still the company's biggest, fell 3 percent to $3.5 billion due to weak demand in Europe.

High performance semiconductor spray paint could be a game changer for organic electronics

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Researchers at Wake Forest University's Organic Electronics group have come up with a novel solution to one of the biggest technological barriers facing the organic semiconductor industry today. Oana Jurchescu, an assistant professor of physics, and a team of researchers developed a high performance organic semiconductor 'spray paint' that can be applied to large surface areas without losing electric conductivity. This is a potentially game changing technology for a number of reasons.

Organic thin film transistors are currently deposited by one of three methods. Drop casting and spin coating conduct electricity well but are limited to small area applications. They could not be used to make a wall-sized, flexible video screen for instance. On the other hand, organic spray-on techniques can be applied to large areas but have poor performance when compared to their small-area counterparts.

Jurchescu's work provides the best of both worlds. The spray-deposition technology developed in her lab produced the highest performance organic thin film transistors for this method to date -- (April 2, 2013) -- comparable to those of drop casting and spin coating. Unlike drop casting and spin coating, her spray-deposition technology can be applied over large surfaces to any medium-from plastic and metal to human skin.

Her team's research, High Mobility Field-Effect Transistors with Versatile Processing from a Small-Molecule Organic Semiconductor was published April 2, 2013 in the journal Advanced Materials.

Because of its superb performance and the fact it can be applied over large areas quickly (it is also inexpensive to process compared to inorganic semiconducting materials like silicon), it has the potential to be produced in commercial quantities. The technology is a big step towards realizing futuristic devices such as transparent solar cells on building windows, car roof and bus stations, electronic displays in previously inaccessible spaces and wearable electronics due to the organic plastics' thin, lightweight and conformal nature.

Baidu's Video Site iQiyi Reportedly Buys PPStream To Intensify Rivalry With Youku Tudou

PPStreamShanghai-based video streaming platform PPStream has reportedly (link via Google Translate) been purchased by iQiyi, the online video unit of Internet search giant Baidu, for around $350 million to $400 million. A Baidu spokesman would not confirm the reports, which have been circulating in Chinese media since the end of last month, but a statement by the head of rival video platform Youku-Tudou seems to confirm that a deal has indeed been struck: “After the success and synergy created by the Youku Tudou merger, increasing consolidation was inevitable throughout the video industry. We are happy to see this purchase go forward, we expect this acquisition will further rationalize the industry and help reduce piracy in the sector,” said Youku-Tudou president Dele Liu in an email. iQiyi launched in 2010 under the auspices of Baidu and from the beginning has focused on legally distributed, professionally produced media and entertainment content, which has led to the site being referred to as “China’s Hulu” (in fact, former investor Providence Equity Partner was also an investor in Hulu until exiting from the U.S. site in October). Tudou previously offered mostly user-generated content, but after being purchased for $1 billion by Youku, the combined company has focused on signing content partnership deals. The drive toward legal content was prompted in part by last year’s crackdown on “inappropriate” material by the Chinese government. Baidu bought out Providence’s controlling stake in iQiyi last November for an undisclosed amount. The timing of the deal seemed to suggest that Baidu made the purchase in response to Youku and Tudou’s August merger. At the time, Baidu chairman and CEO Robin Li said that Baidu planned to integrate iQiyi’s content into Baidu’s overall search and mobile services. “Online video is a key strategic vertical for Baidu as user numbers and time-spend continue to increase expontentially, underscoring the tremendous potential in the sector,” said Li. Acquiring PPStream would help boost iQiyi’s market share, which lags behind Youku-Tudou, China’s biggest video site. According to estimates by Analysys International, Youku-Tudou holds about 32.4 percent of China’s online video market, while its nearest competitor Sohu.com has 10.9 percent. iQiyi held just 6.7 percent of the market. The deal is also potentially a lifeline for PPStream, which has struggled to make a dent in China’s highly competitive online video industry.

Tribeca's "Trust Me" shows dark comic side of Hollywood business

By Ellen Wulfhorst

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The dark comedy "Trust Me," playing at the Tribeca Film Festival, paints an uncomfortable picture of backstabbing and subterfuge in the film industry that drew from all - and none - of creator Clark Gregg's personal experiences.

As the film's screenwriter, lead actor and director, Gregg said he had started out writing a big ensemble movie with several story lines, one of which became "Trust Me," about the travails of agent Howard Holloway.

The film tells the story of the hapless Holloway, a failed actor, as he represents a teen-aged actress trying to launch a Hollywood career. Joining Gregg in the cast are Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, Allison Janney and Amanda Peet.

As to the story's real-life roots, the 51-year-old Gregg, with decades of roles to his credit including agent Phil Coulson in the "Iron Man" action movie series, said he has seen "all of it and none of it."

"There was almost nothing that was literally based on anything that happened to me," he told Reuters this week. "At the same time, I felt I was kind of everybody in the movie, like in your dreams."

Speaking of "being everybody," Gregg tackled both directing and starring in "Trust Me," in spite of himself.

"I didn't want to direct myself in my script," he said. "But I had such a clear vision of what I wanted the piece to be and what I wanted the tone to be like.

"I even had a meeting with a director, and I never brought it up," he said. "I had the script in my bag, and I couldn't hand it to him."

But the chaos of being the film's screenwriter, director and lead ended up reflecting the chaos of the lead character's life, he said.

Gregg describes his movie, which is having its world premiere at New York's Tribeca Film Festival this month, as the tale of the "not incidental savagery" involved when many people are battling for a goal, such as stardom, that is attainable only to a very few.

"People will subvert everything that they grew up believing in at times to do it, so it's a kind of a metaphor about the distortive effect of our obsession with success," he said.

As to his own success, Gregg, who wrapped up his role as a regular on the television series "The New Adventures of Old Christine" three years ago, said he is working on a pilot featuring his Coulson character.

Also, he added, he is writing a period gangster movie, and heading back to "the usual attempts to get work as an actor that make me very much like all the beaten-up people in the film."

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) ? A second Mississippi man investigated in connection to ricin-laced letters sent to the president and a U.S. senator said Wednesday that investigators "ripped" through his house during an hours-long search the previous day after charges were dropped against another man in the case.

No investigators appeared to be at the Tupelo home Wednesday morning, and Everett Dutschke said he'd gone to a friend's house to rest. Piles of items could be seen all over the floor through the window. The home was searched Tuesday by dozens of officials, some in hazmat suits, from early in the afternoon until about 11 p.m. CDT. Officials declined to comment on what they had found or on the next phase of the investigation.

At one point, two FBI agents and two members of the state's chemical response team left Dutschke's property and began combing through ditches, culverts and woods about a block away from his house in the neighborhood of single-family detached homes.

Dutschke (DUHST'-kee), who spoke with The Associated Press by telephone during the search, said his house was also searched last week. He said he and his wife had gone to a friend's Wednesday because they didn't feel safe at their home.

"They ripped everything out of the house," he said Wednesday morning, adding: "I haven't slept at all."

No charges have been filed against Dutschke and he hasn't been arrested. Both he and Paul Kevin Curtis, who had faced charges in the case, say they have no idea how to make the poisonous ricin and had nothing to do with sending the letters to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Mississippi county judge Sadie Holland.

Curtis, a 45-year-old celebrity impersonator, has maintained his innocence since his arrest.

Referring to investigators' questions, Curtis said after he was released from custody Tuesday afternoon, "I thought they said rice and I said, 'I don't even eat rice.' ... I respect President Obama. I love my country and would never do anything to pose a threat to him or any other U.S. official."

A one-sentence document filed by federal prosecutors said charges against Curtis were dropped, but left open the possibility they could be reinstated if authorities found more to prove their case. Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment, but the document said the ongoing investigation had revealed new information. It did not elaborate.

Dutschke and Judge Holland know each other: In 2007, he lost his Republican bid for a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives to Holland's son, Democratic state Rep. Steve Holland, who was the incumbent.

Steve Holland previously said that during a political rally in the small town of Verona in 2007, Dutschke gave a speech disparaging the Holland family, including him, his mother and his wife.

Holland said his mother, who spoke just after Dutschke at the rally, called him back on the stage and said, "You're not going to disparage me. Now, you apologize to me."

Holland said Dutschke returned to the stage and at Judge Holland's instruction, got down on his knees and apologized, but Dutschke disputed that Tuesday.

"That's just Steve Holland being Steve Holland," he said, adding that he did not get down on his knees and apologize for anything. "He's a bit grandiose about the way he describes things."

Since Curtis' arrest at his Corinth, Miss., home on April 17, his attorneys have said their client didn't do it and suggested he was framed. An FBI agent testified in court this week that no evidence of ricin was found in searches of Curtis' home.

The dismissal is the latest twist in a case that has been strange from the beginning and rattled the country during the same week as the Boston Marathon bombing and a fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas.

Dutschke and Curtis are no strangers to each other. Dutschke said the two had a disagreement and the last contact they had was in 2010. Dutschke said he threatened to sue Curtis for saying he was a member of Mensa, a group for people with high IQs.

Hal Neilson, an attorney for Curtis, said the defense gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis.

"Dutschke came up," he said. "They (prosecutors) took it and ran with it. I could not tell you if he's the man or he's not the man, but there was something there they wanted to look into."

An FBI intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP said the two ricin-laced letters addressed to Obama and Wicker said: "To see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance." Both were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message."

Curtis was already well known to Wicker because he had written to the Republican senator and other officials. Curtis also wrote a novel called "Missing Pieces," about black-market body parts he claimed to have found while working at a hospital ? a claim the hospital says is untrue. Curtis posted similar language on his Facebook page and elsewhere. The documents indicate Curtis had been distrustful of the government for years. He told the AP on Tuesday that he realizes his writings made him an easy target.

Multiple online posts under the name Kevin Curtis on various websites that could be seen by anyone refer to the conspiracy he claimed to uncover when working at a local hospital from 1998 to 2000. In one post, Curtis said he sent letters to Wicker and other politicians. He signed off: "This is Kevin Curtis & I approve this message."

Christi McCoy, another attorney for Curtis, said she doesn't know what new information prosecutors have, but said the plot to frame her client was "very, very diabolical."

Curtis, dressed after his release Tuesday in a black suit, red shirt, necktie and sunglasses, said he met Dutschke in 2005 but that for some reason Dutschke "hated" and "stalked" him. "To this day I have no clue of why he hates me."

Ricin is derived from the castor plant that makes castor oil. There is no antidote and it is at its deadliest when inhaled. It can be aerosolized, released into the air and inhaled. The Homeland Security handbook says the amount of ricin that fits on the head of a pin is enough to kill an adult if properly prepared.

Dutschke said agents asked him about Curtis, whether Dutschke would take a lie-detector test and if he had ever bought castor beans, which can be used to make the potent poison.

"I'm a patriotic American. I don't have any grudges against anybody. I did not send the letters," Dutschke said.

After charges were dropped against Curtis, he said: "I'm a little shocked."

Tuesday's events began when the third day of a preliminary and detention hearing was canceled without officials explaining the change. Within two hours, Curtis had been released.

FBI Agent Brandon Grant said in court Monday that searches last week of Curtis' vehicle and house in Corinth, found no ricin, ingredients for the poison, or devices used to make it. A search of Curtis' computers found no evidence he researched making ricin. Authorities produced no other physical evidence at the hearings tying Curtis to the letters.

All the envelopes and stamps were self-adhesive, Grant said Monday, meaning they won't yield DNA evidence. One fingerprint was found on the letter sent to a Lee County judge, but the FBI doesn't know who it belongs to, Grant said.

The experience, Curtis said, has been a nightmare for his family. He has four children ? ages, 8, 16, 18 and 20. It also has made him reflect deeply on his life.

"I've become closer to God through all this, closer with my children and I've even had some strained relationships with some family and cousins and this has brought us closer as a family," he said.

More antibiotics may not always be better

Finish the course of pills: that's what all doctors say when they prescribe antibiotics, and for now, you should heed them. But new research suggests that might not always work as well as they assume, and may even compound the problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Doctors consider it good practice to hit bacterial infections with high doses of antibiotics for days or longer, to make sure all the bacteria are dead. To treat tough infections such as TB, they combine two or more antibiotics in order to prevent the evolution of resistance, so if a bug starts resisting drug A, it will still be killed by drug B.

But much of this is based on assumption rather than evidence, says Robert Beardmore at the University of Exeter in the UK. He and his colleagues tested this by treating cultures of E. coli with two antibiotics considered synergistic ? they kill more bacteria together than separately. They found that bacteria did indeed die off fast on the first day.

But any bacteria that survived were those with genes for resisting both drugs, and they boomed as drug-sensitive competitors died. Bacterial loads were higher after treatment than they had been before it, and higher drug doses just quickened the growth of resistant populations.

"It's a double-edged sword," says Andrew Read of Pennsylvania State University in University Park, who was not involved in the work. "If you kill all the bacteria with your initial dose, great." But if not ? and antibiotics fall to sub-lethal levels at some time or in some part of the body during treatment ? then problems arise.

Further experiments performed by Beardmore's team suggest that not only synergistic drugs but also longer treatment might not hammer the surviving bacteria as intended. Instead such approaches might make more of the survivors antibiotic-resistant, and may even worsen the infection. "We need to base treatment on better evidence," says Read.

"I'm not advocating low dosing," says Beardmore, as this does lead to resistance. But, he says, we need a better understanding of how antibiotics work in different situations instead of going on untested assumptions.

He is now testing whether antibiotics that antagonise each other ? one may interfere with another's binding to bacteria, for instance ? might actually work better than synergistic drugs. This counter-intuitive possibility, thrown up by a mathematical model of bacterial evolution, might work in practice because antibiotics that antagonise each other do not make antibiotic resistance so advantageous.

CPS students infrequently use technology for school, study finds ...

At a time when technological proficiency is a prerequisite for most careers, about half of sixth- through 12th-graders in Chicago Public Schools report using technology for school less than once a week, according to a new report from the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research.

Between 20 and 30 percent of students report never or rarely using technology for school?at most once or twice a semester, the report found. At the same time, 92 percent report having access to the Internet at home, signaling a clear divide between how students interact with technology in and out of school.?

?Given that low-income students are the least likely to be exposed to technology at home, we were surprised and encouraged by the large percentage of Chicago students who reported having access to the Internet,? said Stacy Ehrlich, lead author of the report. ?However, we were disappointed to learn that widespread access outside of school did not translate into widespread use for academic purposes.?

The report, ?The Use of Technology in Chicago Public Schools 2011: Perspectives from Students, Teachers and Principals,? is based on 2011 and 2012 survey data from CPS teachers, principals and students.

Other key findings from the report:

  • Technology use varied significantly among schools in Chicago. Technology use is much more frequent in schools that serve higher-achieving students. For example, more than 80 percent of students in selective enrollment high schools use the Internet weekly for school, compared with 57 percent of students in neighborhood schools and 62 percent in charter schools. Roughly 20 percent of students in neighborhood and charter schools report never using the Internet, or using it only one to two times per semester, compared with just 6 percent of students in selective enrollment schools.
  • Students use technology more frequently in schools where teachers also use technology more and have higher expectations for use. Unfortunately, only 45 to 50 percent of teachers use computer programs in delivering lessons at least weekly. And less than half ask their students to complete coursework using technology on a weekly basis. Teachers in magnet elementary and selective enrollment high schools use technology more, expect their students to use technology more, and feel a more supportive culture for the use of technology in their schools.
  • Principals? expectations set the stage for technology use among teachers and students. Students and teachers use technology more, and feel more support for integrating technology into teaching and learning, in schools where principals say they have higher expectations for use. Teachers also use technology more, and feel more support for the use of technology, in schools where principals report fewer barriers to the use of computers and technology.

?CPS and other districts across the country have made huge strides in providing students with laptops and Internet access,? Ehrlich said. ?But these findings are a reminder that access does not always lead to use. Schools are under a lot of pressure to increase their technology supply, especially for the administration of computer-based assessments. Going forward, we need to ensure that this newly purchased technology is not only used?but used in ways that build skills and offer more complex learning opportunities.?

Google Glass Explorer Editions rolling off the production line, will be delivered in waves

Google just shot out an email to folks who signed up for its Glass Explorers program at I/O last year, and it's spreading word that Glass units have begun to roll off the production line for participants. The roughly 2,000 devs who pre-ordered the spectacles won't be getting them all at once, however, as Page and Co. say they'll be delivered in waves. Mountain View notes it could have waited for every unit to be ready, but decided to send them out as they're made to speed things up. Presumably, winners of the #ifihadglass contest are in line to receive theirs after those who attended the developer powwow, and they'll have to travel to Los Angeles, New York or San Francisco to pick them up. Hit the break to live vicariously through the search titan's guinea pigs adventurers by reading the email in its entirety.

Pentagon report says North Korea likely has nuclear tipped missiles

By Jack Kim and David Alexander

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Pentagon spy agency has concluded with "moderate confidence" that North Korea has developed a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile, an assessment swiftly dismissed by several U.S. officials and South Korea.

The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) said such a weapon would probably be unreliable. Its assessment, made public by a U.S. lawmaker in Washington, comes amid threats of war by North Korea and just hours before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in Seoul on a visit to the region that will include stops in China and Japan.

South Korean and U.S. officials say Pyongyang appears set to test launch a medium-range missile as a show of strength ahead of the anniversary on Monday of the birth of North Korean founder Kim Il-Sung.

South Korea's Defence Ministry however said it did not believe North Korea could mount a nuclear warhead on a missile.

Despite the DIA report, the Pentagon's spokesman and the U.S. national intelligence director both said it was "inaccurate" to infer Pyongyang had the proven ability to launch a nuclear missile.

The DIA was criticized after the start of the Iraq war in 2003 for being too bullish in predicting Baghdad might have weapons of mass destruction.

Its conclusion about North Korea follows more than a month of rising tension on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea, claiming the United States is planning to invade, has threatened Washington and Seoul with nuclear war, although most experts say Pyongyang has no intention of starting a conflict that would likely bring its own destruction.

"DIA assesses with moderate confidence the North currently has nuclear weapons capable of delivery by ballistic missiles, however the reliability will be low," Republican Representative Doug Lamborn said during a hearing of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee in Washington.

He was quoting a report entitled "Dynamic Threat Assessment 8099: North Korea Nuclear Weapons Program (March 2013)".

A U.S. official said the quotation cited by Lamborn was in a section that had been erroneously marked unclassified. The study, dated last month, appeared to be the first time the agency had reached such a conclusion.

QUESTION OF MINIATURISATION

Seoul played down the report.

"Our military's assessment is that the North has not yet miniaturized," South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told a news briefing.

"North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests but there is doubt whether it is at the stage where they can reduce the weight and miniaturize to mount on a missile."

Pyongyang has frequently cited the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq as a reason it needed nuclear weapons, saying that without them, Washington would seek to topple its government too.

The United Nations sanctioned North Korea for a nuclear test on February 12, its third, sparking a furious response from Pyongyang. The North has also called annual military drills between U.S. and South Korean forces a "hostile" act.

North Korea has stationed as many as five medium-range missiles on its east coast, according to defense assessments by Washington and Seoul. South Korean and U.S. officials believe it is preparing to launch a Musudan missile, whose range of 3,500 km (2,100 miles) or more would put Japan within striking distance and may threaten Guam, home to U.S. military bases.

"INACCURATE"

The debate about North Korea's nuclear ability focuses on whether it has a warhead small enough to mount on a missile and whether it can then ensure that missile re-enters the earth's atmosphere.

North Korea last tested a long-range rocket in December. It launched the rocket into space for the first time but the rocket did not successfully re-enter.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said "it would be inaccurate to suggest that the North Korean regime has fully tested, developed or demonstrated the kinds of nuclear capabilities referenced in the passage" of the DIA report.

The conclusion of the DIA was not shared by the wider U.S. intelligence community, U.S. National Intelligence Director James Clapper said in a statement.

The strong consensus inside the U.S. government is that North Korea does not yet have a nuclear device that would fit longer-range missiles that conceivably could hit the U.S. mainland.

Civilian experts have also said there was no evidence North Korea had tested the complex art of miniaturizing a nuclear weapon to be placed on a long-range missile, a capability the United States, Russia, China and others achieved decades ago.

Greg Thielmann, a former State Department intelligence analyst now with the Arms Control Association advocacy group, said that while he did not have access to the classified material cited in Congress, what was said publicly about DIA's assessment sounded quite tentative.

"It really says to me that this is a speculative statement," Thielmann said. "Moderate (confidence) is higher than low confidence but it doesn't say they know very much."

Lamborn, the congressman, said the DIA reached the conclusion in a mostly classified March 2013 report. He did not say what range the nuclear-capable North Korean missiles might have.

U.S. spy agencies believe the threats of war from North Korea mainly represent an effort by new leader Kim Jong-un to demonstrate he is in command, Clapper said on Thursday.

New South Korean President Park Geun-hye said late on Thursday she was open to resume dialogue with the North and would continue to offer humanitarian aid.

Her long-standing policy is that the North needs to abandon its nuclear program before it gets aid.

Chan adds best director award to his trophy shelf

HONG KONG (AP) ? Jackie Chan has received a lot of awards during a career that's spanned 50 years, but a best director award is rare on his trophy shelves.

The action star took home one for his 100th film, "Chinese Zodiac." He was among entertainers honored at the Huading Awards in Hong Kong on Wednesday night.

Chan was all smiles backstage because he says this award didn't come easy. He says directors like Stanley Kwan and Tsui Hark "move the camera and have fun with it." But he says the tempo is faster in an action film, and it's harder to win directing awards.

He added: "I think I also got lucky."

Chan said last year he thought "Chinese Zodiac" would be his last action movie and he'll focus on other genres.

In other awards, Fan Bing Bing won best actress for "Double Exposure." She's an A-lister in her native China, but her Hollywood debut in "Iron Man 3" was reportedly cut back.

Fan said that as long as she had fun shooting, even if it was a small cameo, it doesn't bother her: "I think it's important to have a good time, and I was helping some friends out. It's fine."

Best-actor winner Nicholas Tse said he was happy about his win and thanked the cast and crew of the winning film "The Bullet Vanishes."

"Cold War" was named best film, and a lifetime achievement award went to filmmaker Raymond Chow.

The Huading Awards winners in some categories are selected by industry experts, while others are voted by viewers.

US hails Yemen leader's military shake-up

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is congratulating the president of Yemen for reshuffling the top echelons of country's military and security services.

The State Department said Thursday that the changes are an "important step" in Yemen's transition to democracy and returning it to stability. It urged the government to swiftly implement the presidential decrees that announced the shake-up late Wednesday.

The steps remove the former president's son and nephews from powerful national security posts where they had been accused of obstructing the U.S.-backed government's attempts to reform and fight an active al-Qaida branch.

The U.S. had expressed concern that some in the military have been taking advantage of their positions for personal gain to interfere in the country's transition, since regime change threatens their personal interests.

Husband Material: 15 Signs You Should Marry Your Boyfriend

By Steph Auteri for YourTango.com

Choosing whether or not to spend the rest of your life with a guy is a pretty weighty decision, on par with other scary decisions like whether you should eventually be responsible for the well-being of another human. Or whether you should have pizza for the fourth day in a row.

It's life-changing.

So, how do you know if your beau is husband material? It's a toughie. How can you ever really know that he's going to be the type of guy you can count on when push comes to shove? The type who will still wine you and dine you after you've been together for five trillion years? The type whose happiness will always be crucial to your own (and vice versa)? The guy who understands that you're obsessed with cats on the Internet (even though he doesn't understand why).

So, without further adieu, here are 15 random signs this one's a keeper:

1. He indulges your guilty pleasures. A guy who's husband material comes home from a long day at work, bypasses his man cave, ambles on over to you instead and up-ends his backpack to drop five bags of Cadbury mini eggs onto the table -- and he doesn't even like chocolate. Then he says, "Muffin top? What muffin top? I love your curves." Swoon.

2. He brags about you to anyone who will listen. A guy who's husband material talks you up to his friends, family, his dry cleaner, the guy at the deli on the corner, his hairdresser, the old woman who lives next door and is always concerned about whether he's "met a nice girl yet" ... even (gulp) his mom. Because he thinks you're talented and amazing and gorgeous, and goddamn, everyone should know.

3. He loves your cats. Or at he least pretends to. Or at the very least he doesn't complain (too much) when, within one week of meeting you, every article of clothing he owns looks like it's growing a beard.

4. He likes your brand of crazy. A guy who's husband material sticks around, even when you're totally irrational or downright bitchy. He recognizes that he can be a pain in the butt, too. Because dude. You get each other.

5. He accompanies you on weekly visits to the nursing home to visit your grandfather. He knows that seeing your grandfather there breaks your heart. And then he engages in enthusiastic conversation with your grandfather, even though he's already heard every story the guy's ever told approximately 5,238 times since you first started seeing each other. That guy is husband material.

6. He fights fair. A guy who's husband material takes a step back and becomes the voice of reason in the midst of your most volatile arguments. Perhaps he even suggests the two of you try that reflexive listening exercise your couples therapist taught you, even though he didn't want to go to a shrink in the first place. But he did anyway.

7. He always remembers to do that thing you love in bed. You know the thing. The one that curls your toes? Where he takes his BLANKETY-BLANK and then BLANKS your BLANK? Because even though he often forgets that it takes more than a quick nipple squeeze to put you in the mood, he truly does want you to have as much fun as he's having. And he's having a lot of fun.

8. He hams it up in the most hilarious possible way. Your guy is husband material when he makes an a** of himself and you love it. He has that one dance move he likes to do at weddings, in front of all your relatives, inspired by all those Britpop groups he used to listen to back in high school. Your extended family finds this charming. You just roll your eyes and shake your head at him, until he grabs you and spins you around the dance floor and then attempts to dip you -- a move that almost causes your... um... top to fall out of your top.

9. He is not a jealous man. A guy who's husband material inherently understands that you don't suddenly become blind to the attractiveness of others just because you're in a committed relationship. He trusts you. Now there's a concept!

10. He understands that the healthiest couples are not attached at the hip. Rather, the healthiest couples live their own lives, having experiences they can then share with each other the next time they're together. As a result, your relationship does not implode just because he wants to go away on a weekend snowboarding trip with his coworkers, or because you don't always invite him out to the bar with your OMies after yoga class.

11. And speaking of yoga ... A guy who's husband material attends your first few yoga classes when you suddenly decide that you've found your new life calling. Even though he hates yoga and collapses out of every single pose every five minutes while letting out a huge sigh. And then, when class is over, he's proud of himself for remembering what Warrior II is, and thanks you for teaching it to him.

12. He writes a song about you. Hear me out: A guy who's husband material pens a song about how you're a bit of a loner, but "loner and lover are just a letter apart." And then he performs it at his next gig. And though a part of you feels as if you're living a scene from one of those cheesy, formulaic rom-coms, another part of you notices that your heart seems to be swelling in your chest, until you almost can't even breathe.

13. He's game. A guy who's husband material takes you hang gliding on your 30th birthday because it's been on your bucket list since forever. And he tries it, too, even though he's terrified of heights.

14. In fact, he's willing to try anything with you, no matter how odd or terrifying. He goes to a "cuddle party" with you because you need to do a write-up on it, even though he feels totally creeped out. He takes a hoop dance class with you, even though he suspects you're trying to emasculate him. He dresses up as Santa with you and storms the streets of NYC, where he eventually proposes to you, asking you to be his Mrs. Claus.

15. You just know it. Sometimes, even when you're frustrated with him, you remember just one of these things and are suddenly overcome by a massive, overwhelming wave of love. When he's husband material, you just know it.
