Homeowners, even the smallest space can be well-decorated and made to feel like home. For today?s family room makeover by one of Christine Ringenbach?s colleagues, the small space created the perfect place to gather with family and friends. All it needed was a little help from a professional interior decorator.
Before:
This homeowner wanted her family room to be a cozy place to gather. But with such little space, she found herself using her laptop from the sofa, the kids? game consoles atop the mantle, and the dining table with too few seats to ever entertain guests. Fortunately, no area is too small and no room too difficult in its construction. Soon, the homeowner enjoyed interior design that fit the space and matched her personal style.

Homeowners, want to see this kind of transformation in your family rooms? Try these interior decorating tips from Henderson interior decorator Christine Ringenbach.
1. Find the Right Furniture.???????????
This family room needed balance. The sectional sofa was simply too big. To bring balance, the decorator removed the large sofa. Then she added a smaller sofa and three chairs, arranged for prime TV viewing. To finish this conversation area, she included two small leather ottomans for the family to prop up their feet or for extra seating when they entertained guests.
2. Conceal the Game Consoles.
With this family?s affinity for video games, the decorator needed a place for game consoles and controllers. She chose two low cabinets with decorative wire fronts, which would provide the necessary ventilation for the game systems but keep them concealed. Then she placed these cabinets on each side of the fireplace, and she added cushioned tops to provide even more family room seating.
3. Create a Workspace.
Since this family room shares space with the kitchen, the desk provides much needed definition between these two rooms. But it also delivers a convenient workspace. With the desk?s placement behind the sofa, the homeowner could continue to use her laptop while watching TV or interacting with her family.
4. Maximize your Room?s Layout.
The decorator made the best of this small space. In addition to the new conversation area and workspace, the decorator also created a solution for the dining area. Rather than squeeze dining chairs against the window, she simply added a customized, cushioned banquet. Then the family could comfortably fit eight people around their table and maintain the look of well-scaled room.
5. Finish with Window Treatments. ???????????
Any room wouldn?t be complete without coordinating window treatments. For this family room, the decorator chose woven wood shades that easily let in light for entertaining, could block out light for TV viewing, and provided privacy. While these shades served practical purposes, they also softened the windows to match the interior d?cor. Then the decorator finished the room with shaped valances to complement the room?s overall design.
Homeowners, whether your family room includes a small space or a grand area, you can enjoy a well-decorated room that fits your family?s needs.
